In her teenage years, her family had to move to Arizona. She attended Mesquite High School in Gilbert, Arizona. Afterward, she attended the prestigious Yale University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English.

After her excellence in college, Kimes got a job with Fortune Small Business Magazine in 2007. She worked as a business journalist. She won awards notably from New York Press Club, the National Press Club, and the Asian American Journalists Association and others.
Kimes has also ventured into health writing when she wrote an investigative piece in 2012 titled Bad to the Bone, a piece that exposed the indiscriminate use of cement to repair bone tissue. Kimes discussed lethal consequences. She won the Henry R. Luce Award for the piece.
